At McClain Orthodontics, we're proud to help patients throughout Paris, TN and the surrounding areas achieve healthy, beautiful smiles through orthodontic treatment, working to make treatment as convenient as possible for our patients. Despite new options like Invisalign, braces are still the most popular treatment we offer, and that leaves many prospective patients curious about the process of getting braces. If you're considering revitalizing your smile through orthodontic braces, we're here to provide some details on what you can expect from the process.

Phase 1: Before Treatment

The process for getting your braces begins from the moment you schedule a consultation at our office. At your consultation, our Paris orthodontist will carefully examine your teeth and take diagnostic records like x-rays and impressions to gain a complete picture of your current smile and situation, then use these tools to form a comprehensive diagnosis of your orthodontic condition, or malocclusions. Your orthodontist will then talk with you about your smile’s condition and discuss the treatments available to you. If you both decide that braces are the best option, our orthodontist will then use advanced technology to design a detailed treatment plan and create a set of brackets and archwires to facilitate your treatment.

Phase 2: Active Treatment

The next phase is the active portion of your treatment. This begins when you visit our office to have your braces placed on your teeth, and lasts for the entirety of the time you wear your braces. During this phase, you'll need to take great care of your teeth and practice impeccable oral hygiene, and avoid foods that can damage your braces. You'll also need to visit our office for checkup appointments every 6 weeks or so. While it's different for everyone, the entire active process for most patients takes 18-24 months.

Phase 3: Post-Treatment

Finally, you'll have your braces removed – but as exciting of a moment as it is, it doesn't signify the end of your treatment. After getting your braces removed, you'll start the post-treatment retention phase of your treatment. We'll fit you for a custom-made retainer and provide detailed instructions on how to wear and care for your retainers. Wearing your retainers is critical to protecting your smile in the long-term, so while patients often forget to consider post-treatment care, it's actually one of the most important parts of the whole treatment process.
