Our orthodontists understand that treating orthodontic issues early can prevent severe problems later on, and allows your kid's orthodontist to have more control to create a beautiful smile. That is why Dr. McClain and his team work hard to provide each patient with quality care that is both efficient and effective. Our orthodontists work hard to provide a personalized level of care for your kids, to ensure all that they feel comfortable when they visit our office.

Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment

Our practice agrees with the recommendation given by the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) that states all children should have their first orthodontic evaluation by the age of seven. By this age, a child’s teeth and jaws have developed enough to allow an orthodontist to detect any potential problems early on before they have the chance to become more complex problems that are more difficult and costly to treat.

During your child’s initial evaluation, our Paris, TN orthodontist will look for any problems that need to be addressed like permanent teeth that may come in crowded, a gummy smile, an open bite or overbite. Some benefits of early orthodontic treatment are:

  • Prevents future problems: Since younger kids' permanent teeth have not finished erupting, we can thoroughly evaluate and address any impending problems at the earliest stage. By starting treatment early, we are can recognize potential problems and correct them before they become more serious.
  • Provides better outcomes: In addition to preventing future issues, by starting treatment early your kid's orthodontist can provide better results. Rather than having to fix problems that have occurred, they can rather just prevent them which can provide better outcomes.
  • Easier treatment: By starting early on, your kid's orthodontist will not have to address as many issues, and as a result can reduce the amount of time your kid will have to spend at the orthodontist.
  • Eliminate bad habits: Catching a habit a child may have, like thumb sucking or tongue pushing, can be addressed and stopped early on which can prevent many issues later on.
  • More cost efficient: Some orthodontic issues we come across can be costly, and could have been prevented with early treatment. Pursuing early treatment can save you money by preventing more costly orthodontic issues later on.

Phase I & II Treatment

If Dr. McClain determines that your child has a treatable problem during his/her first orthodontic evaluation, he will most likely take a two-phase approach. Phase I treatment will begin right away while your child still has most of his/her primary teeth. Most kids who undergo Phase I treatment are between the ages of six and ten. This treatment may involve your child wearing a special orthodontic device like an expander, a retainer or even partial braces. The purpose of the Phase I treatment is to:

  • Improve biting and chewing function
  • Correct harmful oral habits
  • Prevent or stop problems from developing
  • Guide the growth of the jaw bones that support the teeth so the jaw and teeth are well-aligned
  • Lower the risk of damage to front teeth that protrude
  • Guide permanent teeth into their best positions
  • Improve appearance

Phase II treatment will start when your child is older, based on his or her growth and unique orthodontic needs. This second phase of treatment typically involves using braces or Invisalign to properly align the teeth to improve both function and appearance. The purpose of the Phase II treatment is to:

  • Move the permanent teeth into their final positions
  • Correct minor bite issues
  • Improve the function of teeth and overall facial appearance
  • Give your child good self-confidence, knowing his or her smile looks great

Your child’s growth and orthodontic treatment are meant to complement each other. By timing your child’s treatment according to how the jaws and teeth develop, Dr. McClain can take advantage of your child’s oral growth and development. Children who receive early orthodontic treatment can often avoid having to undergo treatment later in life that’s more drastic, time-consuming and costly.
