Benefits Of Early Orthodontic Treatment

There are many benefits to getting your kid braces early. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that your kid receives his or her first orthodontic screening by age 7. Some benefits of early orthodontic treatment are:

  • Prevents Future Problems: Since younger kids' permanent teeth have not finished erupting, we can thoroughly evaluate and address any impending problems at the earliest stage. By starting treatment early, we are can recognize potential problems and correct them before they become more serious.you
  • Provides Better Outcomes: In addition to preventing future issues, by starting treatment early your kid's orthodontist can provide better results. Rather than having to fix problems that have occurred, they can rather just prevent them which can provide better outcomes.
  • Easier Treatment: By starting early on, your kid's orthodontist will not have to address as many issues, and as a result can reduce the amount of time your kid will have to spend at the orthodontist.
  • Eliminate Bad Habits: Catching a habit a child may have, like thumb sucking or tongue pushing, can be addressed and stopped early on which can prevent many issues later on.
  • More Cost Efficient: Some orthodontic issues we come across can be costly, and could have been prevented with early treatment. Pursuing early treatment can save you money by preventing more costly orthodontic issues later on.

Phase I & II Treatment

Dr. McClain and his team understand that every patient is unique, which is why we offer a variety of treatment options to meet your kid's needs. That is why during the initial evaluation, your kid's orthodontist will first determine what problems that need to be addressed, such as potential crowding, open bite, overbite or gummy smiles. When it comes to early orthodontic treatment, this can be completed within 2 phases.

Phase I is an early interceptive treatment plan that involves the use of limited orthodontic appliances such as expanders or partial/limited braces before all the permanent teeth have erupted. This treatment makes more space to prevent overcrowding or incorrect jaw alignments for developing teeth. Phase I builds a strong foundation for the development of your child’s teeth and jaw.

Phase II treatment begins when all the permanent teeth have come in. It requires the use of traditional metal braces or Invisalign to move teeth into their correct positions. This is the final stage of the treatment, which will give your child a beautiful, straight smile that he or she deserves!
