At McClain Orthodontics, we’re glad to serve patients of all ages in and around Paris, TN. While we proudly provide adult treatment for our adult patients and early treatment for our youngest patients, the most common patients to come visit their orthodontist are those in their adolescence. You may be familiar with this fact, though you may not be quite as familiar with the reasoning behind the popularity of adolescent treatment.

Why Adolescence Is the Perfect Time for Orthodontics

The most common time for a child to undergo orthodontic treatment is between the ages of 13 and 16. This is because when a child reaches the age of 13, he or she will have typically lost every primary tooth and the permanent teeth will have come in. Because this is generally the earliest time that orthodontic treatment can begin, this is a perfect time to visit an orthodontist and get any orthodontic problems fixed.

Just a handful of the benefits of undergoing adolescent orthodontic treatment include the following:

  • A teenager’s jaw and face are still developing at this time, which can make it much easier to treat any orthodontic problems.
  • Treating orthodontic problems at a younger age will be simpler and cost less because these problems will only grow worse as a patient gets older.
  • The treatment will be shorter since adolescents have higher metabolism.
  • Because many teenagers are already wearing braces, there’s no negative stigma about wearing them.

Our Treatment Options For Teens

Some of the treatment options and types of braces that your orthodontist is capable of providing you are as follows:

  • Metal Braces: These are the standard types of braces that you’re probably well-aware of. They’re very effective and also economical, utilizing metal brackets and wires to shift a patient’s teeth.
  • Ceramic Braces: These are very similar to metal braces, only they use ceramic brackets, which allow for a much more discreet orthodontic treatment.
  • Invisalign: Unlike traditional braces that use brackets and wires, Invisalign uses plastic, removable aligners to straighten a patient’s smile. These aligners are also practically invisible, allowing for the most discreet treatment possible.

How Long Your Treatment Will Last

One of the most common questions we get regards the length of time that orthodontic treatment will take. Whether the treatment includes metal braces, ceramic braces, or Invisalign, there’s unfortunately really no decent estimate that we can provide. Each patient is entirely unique and has his or her own needs. Some may only need to wear them for six months while others may need to undergo treatment for 30 months. Typically, treatment will last between 12 months and 24 months, but this can vary greatly from one patient to the next. After this treatment period is over, you’ll then need to wear a retainer for an indefinite amount of time in order to maintain the new positions of your teeth.
