One of the most frequent concerns of our Paris braces patients is what foods they can eat and which ones they should avoid. Whether you have metal or clear braces, It’s very important to take great care of them as they can be damaged, bent or broken. Here are some foods you will want to avoid once you get your braces on:

Avoid Sticky Foods


If you’re a movie candy fan, you may want to consider bringing some alternate snacks to the theater. Common movie candy such as Milk Duds, Gummy Bears, Now and Laters, Tootsie Rolls and Sugar Babies are dangerous for your braces. These sticky, chewy foods can get lodged in your brackets and wires and cause major damage. Gum is also a no-no when it comes to braces, unless it’s sugarless. Not only can it get stuck in your wires and pull off the cement that holds your brackets on, it can cause cavities.


Avoid Hard Foods


When you have braces, you should be careful about eating anything hard. Hard candy and ice can destroy your braces. Hard taco shells and chips can break off and slivers can get caught in between your wires and even injure gums.  Be careful when eating meat off of a bone like chicken or ribs that you don’t accidentally bite into the bone.


Avoid Biting Into Tough Foods


You’ll find that having braces will make it more difficult to bite into some tougher foods. Food like apples, carrots, and other fresh fruits or vegetables are important to keep in your diet. To make it easier on your braces, Dr. McClain suggests cutting up foods like these into small pieces so that you can easily chew them on your inside teeth. You can also cook many of these to soften them and make them easier to eat. You don’t have to skip the sweet corn either, just cut the corn off the cob and eat it with a spoon. Be careful with french bread, thin crust pizza, and even burgers or tougher cuts of meat like steak.


Avoid Crunchy Foods


Braces and crunchy food are definitely not compatible. Popcorn tops the list of foods you will want to take out of your diet. The hull or husk part of the corn kernel can get stuck in your braces and be lodged below your gums. It’s also dangerous because when you eat popcorn, you often will occasionally bite down on an unpopped kernel. Nuts are also too hard for braces-laden teeth. Stick to nut butter instead.


Avoid Sugary Foods With Braces


It’s important to keep your braces and teeth clean when you have braces. Avoiding foods that are high in sugar content like cake, ice cream, candy and sugary soda can help keep the sugar in your mouth from forming plaque which can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. When you do eat foods with sugar, and after every meal, be sure to brush your teeth.
