DIY Orthodontics & Why It's Bad For You

At McClain Orthodontics, we believe everyone deserves a smile they're proud of, and we strive to make convenient orthodontic treatment as affordable and accessible as possible to everyone in the Paris, TN community. Unfortunately, however, we've started to see the emergence of an unsettling trend: do-it-yourself orthodontics, or DIY braces. While this may seem like an innovative way to improve your smile at home, the truth is it's a dangerous trend that not only doesn't work, but threatens the health of your teeth.

What Are DIY Braces?

DIY braces are a new trend, most popular among teens, where people try to move their teeth on their own, using household materials and not under the supervision of a trained orthodontist. Most commonly, DIY braces involve the use of rubber bands or twine wrapped around the teeth to try to put pressure on the teeth and move them. At first blush, this may seem clever – but it's completely ineffective and incredibly dangerous.

The Problem With DIY Orthodontics

Orthodontics is a complex science that relies on advanced technology to subtly influence the movement of teeth. Orthodontists like Dr. McClain attend years of training, on top of dental school, to learn the complicated techniques and tools used to move teeth – and using blunt methods like rubber bands simply won't work. The teeth only respond to gentle, constant, and precisely-calibrated forces. Orthodontic treatments like braces and Invisalign, when administered by a trained orthodontist, can successfully apply these forces and move the teeth. But without that level of sophistication, treatment won't be effective.

Even worse, DIY orthodontics fundamentally threatens the health of teeth. Applying crude pressure to the teeth in this way can actually cut off the supply of blood to the teeth, eventually killing them and causing the teeth to fall out. That's right: not only will DIY orthodontics not give you a new smile, it will likely destroy your current smile! That's why orthodontic treatment should only be attempted by a trained, board-certified orthodontist.
